SALZKAMMERGUT, AUSTRIA. In 1997, the Austrian town of Haltstatt was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. With less than 1,000 inhabitants, Haltstatt is famous for its salt mines (Salzwelten Hallstatt) and its waterfalls. Because of its impressive beauty, Haltstatt is sometimes also referred to as “the pearl of Austria.”
