As the capital city of Spain, Madrid is a beautiful and lively city that has a range of different activities and places to see. MADbudget offers some insider’s guides to the lifestyle of Madrid and essential information for anyone planning a visit to the city.
CHUECA, MADRID. Madrid takes pride in the fact that it caters to all, whether you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight. Perhaps one of the best-known gay areas in the city is Chueca.
This ‘barrio,’ or neighbourhood, can be found in the centre of Madrid, just off Gran Via. Hundreds of gay-oriented businesses, including bars, coffee-houses, restaurants, clubs and design shops are spread throughout the area.
The Saturday of the last weekend of June is usually known as the Dia del Orgullo, or Gay Pride Day. During this time, Chueca is a centre of attraction in Madrid and a memorable experience for gay and straight people alike. Street parties, music, food and drink street stalls and kiosks are set up amongst the decorations and brightly coloured streamers around the Plaza de Chueca.
The area during this occasion is a must-sight lasting from the end of June to the first week of July.
