SANTIAGO, CHILE. Chilean photographer Óscar Echevarría records his urban surroundings, where a fellow inhabitant has painted his TV to say “Apaga la tele, viva tu vida” – “Turn off the TV, live your life.” An implicit protest against World Television Day, one of many celebratory days commemorated by the United Nations. Since 1996, November 21 has been declared to mark a day “in recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by alerting world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues.”
