Meet RGNN Artist-in-Residence Joanna van Marle

Joanna van Marle is a social media artist & researcher, as well as a lecturer at the Institute for Media, Information and Communication of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Joanna’s work focuses on going green and supporting the environment. During her Artist Residency at ROOSTERGNN in Madrid, Spain, Joanna carried out an interactive photo shoot at our photo studio, in which she played with vegetables as her jewels.

I am in the middle of watermelon universe and it makes me smile. It took me a while before I discovered that this juicy fruit is packed with vitamins! It’s because the watermelon is so greedy. It needs lots of space, lots of sun, lots of water and lots of nutrients. Spain got it all and delivers it through this fruit. While eating I am receiving sun, water & nutrients. I want to give it back. I am purchasing products without the use of nasty chemicals. Giving small animals & birds space and I am an investor in the fertility of the Spanish soil. Yes, I am going organic if I can. It’s the universal game of ‘give and take’. Fun today in the photo studio @rooster_gnn. No! this isn’t me, this is how I felt. Playing with all kind of fruits and some vegetables. By the way; Kiwi is out of the season. Some results of the shoot will be available on my timeline soon. I am doing an artist residency @rooster_gnn ; doing research on green consumer behaviour, explore the city and make post for Instagram. Spain is the land of plenty when it’s coming to fruits and veggies.This is one of the reasons I came to Spain. This is the veggie garden of Europe. Did you know that Spain is the number one fresh fruit and vegetable exporter of the world? Each year, Spain exports around 12 million tons of fruits and vegetables. The bulk of those exports come from just three Spanish provinces: Valencia is the citrus capital of Spain, Murcia offers lettuce, cabbage, melons and grapes and Almeria yields cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes and bell peppers. In Madrid I’m pretty close to those gardens. I travelled in less than 5 hours from the south of France to Madrid in a super comfy train. You have my deep bow for the intelligent design of the kingfisher and the Japanese engineer who recognised it. Eiji Nakatsu, an engineer and a birdwatcher, used his knowledge of the splashless water entry of kingfishers. Kingfishers move quickly from air (a low-resistance space) to water (high-resistance space). The kingfisher’s beak provides an almost ideal shape for such an impact. Because the train faced the same challenge, moving from low-resistance open air to high-resistance air in the tunnel, Nakatsu designed the forefront of the bullet train based on the beak of the kingfisher. Nature’s intelligent design has humans so much to offer. The point is; if we are willing to work with nature and not against it, we all will thrive!
