The fully-funded fellowship is aimed at practicing journalists all over the world, enabling them to research a topic of their choice, related to their work and industry, before returning to the newsrooms. This is offered by the Reuters Institute, based at the University of Oxford. The fellowship allows the participants a chance to network with journalists from around the globe, spend time away from pressing deadlines, and examine key issues facing the industry with input from experts, their fellow journalists, and practitioners. The fellowship can last between two to three terms.
Program Details:
– Academic Development:
Work with an experienced adviser, usually an Oxford academic or senior practioner, to research and produce a paper that will be puslished and promoted by the Reuters Institute. The participant will benefit from the world-class facilities offered by the University of Oxford, including access to the various seminars and lectures held within the university. Moreover, the participant is encouraged to engage with the different cutting-edge research facilities, including the centers for African, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Easter and Wester European, Japanese and Chinese studies.
– Industry Insights:
Attend seminars given by a diverse range of guest speakers who will share their experience and thoughts into key industry trends and developments. Visit world-class news organizations and gain insight into how they approach the challenges that face the industry. Previous visits have included trips to Thompson Reuters, the Financial Times, the BBC, the Economist, and the Guardian.
– Knowledge and Cultural Exchange:
Exchange ideas and experiences with a diverse range of international people who will become the participant’s peers throughout the fellowship. Around 25 fellows a year join the program, all from high-level media organizations all over the world, offering participants a chance to grow their networks, develop a global set of contacts, and gain insight into international trends and developments. There will be key cultural and organizational visits throughout the UK. Previous destinations have included Oxfam, the House of Commons, and the Royal Shakespeare Company at Strattford-upon-Avon.
Eligibility:
– Minimum 5 years of journalistic experience, or in a rare case be able to demonstrate the equivalent level of expertise.
– Be able to write at a publishable level of English, allowing the participant to produce papers when necessary. If English is not the first language of the applicant, a valid certificate of proficiency is required.
