BARCELONA, SPAIN. If you can get in to this restaurant, go! I can only describe my experience as a gastronomic exploration, without any high-end restaurant pretension.

Airbags of Manchego Cheese | Robert Persky

Airbags of Manchego Cheese | Robert Persky

The restaurant is owned by the Adriá brothers, who are famous for being the chefs of the former most famous restaurant in the world, elBulli. Each food, which came in a tapa style, was completely creative. We had apple soaked in tequila, liquefied olives, and airbags of manchego cheese, to name a few.

The place is very casual, and the theme is that of a carnival. The waiters are dressed up as theatre attendants, and hurry between the different food prep stations spread throughout the place. Outdoor seating is also available. The price is extremely reasonable for high-end cuisine. If you desire a more classy experience, 41 Degrees is located next door (and equally hard to get into).

You can order items a la carte, or have the waiter surprise you. We went for a surprise menu, and were able to influence its design by saying how much money we wanted to spend per person and what foods we did and did not like.

Reservations open up every two months. The minute the reservations open up at midnight, make your reservation. If you wait until the next day, the reservations will all be full. If you cannot make a reservation, I recommend going in at 7:30 pm, when the restaurant opens, and seeing if there were any cancelations that day. This worked for us.
