Puerto Rico is one of the best places for you and your family to vacation on. The island’s unique culture and breathtaking natural resources will surely make your visit worthwhile. It even occupied the number 1 spot on the New York Time’s 52 Places to Go in 2019 list. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to enjoy our delicious food, our artistic expressions and many of the cultural activities that characterize us as cheery people. In order to experience all of those, I listed five places that every tourist should go to if they really wish to enjoy what the island has to offer.
1. Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan
The museum was inaugurated in 2000. Since then it has showcased the best Puerto Rican artists ranging from the 17th century until today. The museum has over 1,000 works of art in its collection, which includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, engravings, among others. It has over 24 exhibition rooms, where both temporary and permanent exhibitions are shown.
The current main exhibition is called “Puerto Rico Plural”, it combines works of art from different artists throughout historic periods to showcase the collective Puerto Rican experience. The exhibition will be displayed until June 9th, 2020.
2. El Malecón, Naguabo
If you plan on coming to the island, you should be ready to “chinchorrear.” It is a local Puerto Rican tradition where people go to local bars or food kiosks to hang out and eat delicacies such as empanadillas, alcapurrias, bacalaos, etc. “El Malecón” in the town of Naguabo has a variety of kiosks and restaurants that serve these kind of dishes as well as their specialty, seafood. It’s located on the eastern side of the island, right in front the coast. You’ll be able to enjoy the view of the Caribbean Ocean and the festive environment along with friends and family.
3. Bosque Seco de Guánica, Guánica
Puerto Rico has a unique geography; you can enjoy beautiful beaches and tropical forests as well as breathtaking views of its mountain ranges. Amongst those natural resources, the Guánica Dry Forest stands out. Although arid, the forest is full of plants and animals. If you love to hike and enjoy nature this is the perfect place for you. It has a variety of trails for you to choose from, prepare to walk a lot and stay
hydrated.
4. Paseo de las Artes, Caguas
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in big culturally enriching festivities, you should consider visiting the “Paseo de las Artes,” located in a town just below San Juan. It’s a public center where monthly activities take place. The biggest one of all is called “Al Fresco,” a big music and culinary event that happens the last Friday of each month. There are live music presentations as well as a variety of food kiosks. Also, every third Saturday of a month, artists from all around the island come together to showcase their art in the “Paseo de los Artistas.” In this event you’ll get the opportunity to buy local art, such as paintings or even ceramics. There are poetry readings, theater performances, and dance presentations. The entrance of the two events is completely free!
5. Cavernas de Camuy, Lares
The Caverns of Camuy are the third largest underground cave system in the world. It is one of the most spectacular locations in the island. In order to explore the caves, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee, which includes a tour guide that will take you around the different caves. Be ready to enjoy stunning views of the massive caverns, along with the stalagmites and stalactites that are formed there. The caves are full of life, there are underground rivers, sleeping bats, and many other natural wonders. It’s a magical place worth traveling to. The caverns are currently closed as part of the Hurricane Maria recovery process but be certain that they will reopen soon.
Without a doubt Puerto Rico should occupy the number one stop of the places you plan to visit. The island has a lot to offer, from diverse artistic expressions and festivities to breathtaking natural wonders. Come and enjoy this tropical treasure. What are you waiting for?
