VENICE, ITALY. The Venice Art Biennale is one of the oldest and most prestigious international events for contemporary art in the world. Since 1895, it has brought artists to the Italian city, capturing the eyes of the major art institutions, collectors and journalists worldwide.

Curated by Massimilliano Gioni, the title of this year’s 55th edition, “The Encyclopedic Palace,” is inspired by Italian-American artist Maurino Auriti. In 1955, Auriti envisioned the creation of an imaginary museum that would contain all human knowledge and discoveries.

While his dream never came to life, its concept lived on, bringing together more than 150 artists from 37 different countries at the 2013 Biennale, on view until Nov. 24th.
