In the last few years, TV series have gained an enormous success. Great actors and actresses now work on series and colossus of entertainment invest in series more than movies. In addition, even companies like Amazon and Netflix started to produce TV series. I want to talk about three British TV series that I discovered some months ago and that are not so popular and mainstream. Here they are…
White Heat
A series produced by BBC2 in 2012 which tells the story of seven people from the troubled 60s to the present day. Through the six episodes, we discover the intertwined lives of the characters, the shy Irish girl, Orla, the exuberant and political involved Jack, and Charlotte, his companion and beautiful girl. Then we meet Jay, the Anglo-Indian boy who is a homosexual and the Black British Victor who becomes a lawyer. Finally there are Lilly, the ephemeral artist, and Alan, the logical one. Drama, feelings and political activity are mixed up in this series leading us through the decades, retracing the most important historical moments and discovering the characters’ lives.
In The Flesh
BBC3 in 2013 produced In the Flesh, the story of Kieren Walker who has recently returned home after a long time. Kieren is a zombie. However, do not be afraid, the British government has found the cure for the zombies, transforming them in “productive members of society”. In only three episodes, the story of Kieren and his family unfolds revealing the grudge, the prejudices and also the love which embrace their lives. Beyond zombies, this is a story of friendship, betrayals, grief and discrimination. After the first season, it was renewed for a second season. A must watch!
Black Mirror
Finally the most famous of these three series, Black Mirror, produced by Channel4. The series analyses modern society and our relation with new technology. Every episode has a complete different cast and story, and the link between each one of them is technology. In fact, the tile of the series is a reference to the screen, the display of our TV and smartphones. Black Mirror received positive critiques all around the world and it has been renewed for a second and third season (that will be produced by Netflix).
