For an hour, I exit the time warp that is Trinidad and re-enter my chaotic reality of Instagram likes and name brands, of artificial beauty, and franchise restaurants, thinking how sad it will be to leave this place, a town which squeezes proudly onto her past, with one foot into the future.
I summoned up all my courage and crossed the dance floor to reach the Cuban boy who was dancing salsa in the corner of the club, turning the heads of the tourists and even locals who were marvelled by his dance steps.
As we approached the Spanish-tiled archway, it became clear that this was only the beginning of our trek up the Escambray Mountains in the southern Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus.
